Highway 97 (Main Street) re-surfacing and Improvements – Phase Two
This project could start as early as the end of September and will likely carry on into November before paving plants shut down. Construction on the bumpouts will start first and will likely affect businesses and pedestrians during this portion of the project.
Bumpouts will be built on three corners: Bank Ave, School Ave and Veteran’s Way. Pedestrians will be encouraged to use just one crosswalk per intersection to cross highway. Drawing shows only two intersections – the busiest. 52 business could be affected in some way from the work.
Most people seemed to be in favour of the improvements and mentioned they’re long overdue. It was noted many times of the recent fatality of a pedestrian that was struck by vehicle.
There are concerns:
Speed in the downtown area with a recommended lower speed and more enforcement. “Many people drive too fast” through downtown.
Fears of business access being blocked by equipment and some business loss during construction. Contractor is obligated to maintain access to all public roads, private properties and businesses at all times. Access will be maintained at all times during construction
