The South Okanagan Minor Hockey Association got a tentative maybe from Osoyoos town council Monday as it sought about $2,500 to help fund a novice tournament this fall.
Association vice-president Jason Bartsch told council the group is in competition on the weekend of November 27-29 with another tournament in Penticton.
In order to make the local event attractive the association plans a banquet for players, family and friends. The association is seeking $2,560 from the town to cover the costs of the meals for the 320 participants.
Mayor Sue McKortoff told Bartsch that the town’s grant-in-aid money for sports teams has already been spent for the year sending three hockey teams and the high school basketball teams to provincial tournaments.
However, she asked staff to prepare a report with possible funding options for the next council meeting. “If we can find some money somewhere, we will,” she said.
