I was sorry to hear of the disappointing experiences that some people had at the carnival last weekend.
The Family Days or Sunshine Festival is a great part of Oliver’s summer and everyone seems to appreciate what happens in our local parks.
Thursday’s concert was rather down in attendance, but those that were there seemed to have a great time, lots of families enjoying the music and atmosphere. As a volunteer, I heard lots of good feedback from Oliverites and visitors alike.
Friday saw a bit of rain but it did not seem to dampen the spirits of families enjoying themselves. It was an opportunity for people to show their talents and many were really good. Saturday’s parade was well organized and fun to attend and then more time to enjoy the fun in the park.
All in all, it seemed to be a very successful weekend, so I was rather saddened to hear people thought they were being unfairly treated at the carnival rides. Parks and Rec, need to look into this and make sure that things improve next year, or scrap the idea of the carnival, altogether.
I did not attend the carnival this year but in past years I have found rides to be an astronomical price for a very short ride. Some of the guys operating the rides use foul language and are quite rude, they should not be working around children. The rides are out of reach of the pocket of most families with several children, but if you attend the activities, children expect to go on the rides. If the rides were not there, families could just enjoy the family activities, the music and the good fun, without spending money on disappointing rides.
Oliver’s Parks and Rec department do a great job. Rhoda, at the tourist centre works so hard to see that events go so smoothly. She organizes her volunteers and is always cheerful, probably when she wants to scream with frustration. The Kiwanis band shell is a marvelous addition to the park, and Oliver people always seemed determined to enjoy whatever is going on. So why bother with the carnival rides, if it is not well organized and in good working condition. Rides are fun for older kids and teens, and I am sure they would be disappointed if the carnival didn’t come, but little kids probably are just as happy with a petting zoo and a bouncy castle.
