Separating fact from fiction in the Okanagan
July 2, 2015
UBC graduate students Maayan Kreitzman and Maery Kaplan-Hallam and UBC associate professor Kai Chan say local residents support the proposal to create the South Okanagan Similkameen national park.
They discuss two recent UBC studies that show the park would provide both local and global benefits by protecting endangered species habitat and clean water, mitigating climate, and offering recreational opportunities.
“The province says it also cares about preserving the diversity of the South Okanagan Similkameen through existing provincial protected areas. But the provincial park system cannot compete with the influx of millions of federal dollars for conservation, education, and park infrastructure that would accompany a new national park,” they write.
This was found on a UBC site this morning – but links to the original were taken down. Another UBC news site also does not include this information.
An opinion piece on this matter by the same people is on the Vancouver Sun three days ago – in a copyrighted opinion piece.
The article says Greg Norton as the person who is directing MLA Linda Larson to make her choices in the riding. The article claims* he was the former president of the Liberal riding association and recently appointed to the Agricultural Land Commission.
