Therapy for Our Spiritual Muscles
Some time ago I sought the help of a massage therapist for relief from muscle pain that had plagued me for weeks. In the series of treatments I recognized some comparison and some contrasts between the treatment process and the way God seeks to bring about therapy for our spiritual muscles.
· Massage therapy starts when I ask for it. God works in our lives to bring us to the point asking for His help. “Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Rom. 10:13 But we need to be humble enough to ask for it. Then comes the process of Christian growth (spiritual muscles).
· The process usually brings on some pain before I gain recovery. This also applies when God decides to work on my spiritual muscles.
· I was repeatedly advised to let go, not resist, and not tense up in order for the therapist to be effective. God also calls on me to let go of stubborn ways and allow Him to direct and correct.
· Refusing to cooperate just makes matters worse.
· Last, it isn’t enough to just go along with all this during the therapy session. There are exercises and lifestyle habits that I must incorporate. Unless I consistently put into practice what God is teaching me I will also not gain strength for my spiritual muscles.
“Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.” Ephesians 6:10
