The Osoyoos RCMP have been made aware of a Facebook post started by a local business in reference to concerns regarding the influx of transient workers in Osoyoos. Many inappropriate and incorrect posts have since been added. The Osoyoos RCMP would like to comment on what is being done to curb the issues raised. The Town of Osoyoos typically sees a large influx of seasonal workers in Osoyoos from the beginning of June to mid August. The majority are here to work in the orchards while others simply come to enjoy the weather. Three years ago many issues arose with some people causing problems throughout the town and particularly on the public beaches. To curb the problems the Town of Osoyoos and the Osoyoos RCMP partnered their response. For the last three years the Town of Osoyoos has provided extra funding to the Osoyoos RCMP to conduct patrols in problem areas above the regular police patrols. This has proven to be very successful in curbing many of the problems and has significantly reduced the calls for service directly relating to those causing a nuisance. As well the town enacted a bylaw in which those causing repeat problems can be banned from all town facilities and beaches for the remainder of the summer. This year the Town of Osoyoos has again provided extra funding to the Osoyoos RCMP. As such the Osoyoos RCMP have reached out to their surrounding detachments in order to line up resources for several extra patrols on the town beaches. These extra patrols start this Thursday, June 18 and will continue periodically throughout the summer. Citing hatred through Social Media is not the way to deal with these issues and only serves to promote others to engage in activity that can be criminal. We understand the frustration people are feeling and want to ensure you we are working hard to keep the town and beaches safe for all locals and tourists to enjoy. As with any issue, they are not solved overnight yet we believe the gains we have made through this partnership have made the beaches safe and will continue working to keep it that way. If you observe any illegal activity, please do not hesitate to report it to the Osoyoos RCMP at 250-495-7236 so that it can be dealt with promptly.
