Hotel eyed for Apple Beach
The owners of the Apple Beach RV Park on Tuk Lake got some encouragement from Oliver council Monday when they asked about the likelihood of success for a modest re-zoning request.
James and Catherine Hodge want to change the zoning designation of their campground from Commercial Tourism 2 to Commercial Tourism 1. This would allow them to build a motel or hostel.
An earlier zoning request for a residential subdivision rejected by council. They were told they would have to wait for an upcoming Official Community Plan review.
On Monday, council generally agreed that the CT2 to CT1 would likely not be a problem. The Hodges indicated they would proceed with a formal re-zoning request.
Solar lights for park paths?
Oliver town staff will research costs and sources for solar lighting on the paths in two city parks, Fairview and Gala.
Town Chief Administrative officer Heidi Frank said that following a suggestion from council, staff looked into the cost of conventional lighting for the paths but found the costs prohibitive.
In the interests of cost efficiency and environmental friendliness, staff suggested that it should investigate options for solar lighting. Council agreed.
Pulled pork in Lions Park
Hammer’s House of Hog will operate a food concession at the north end of the Lions Park parking lot, possibly as soon as next week.
According to Oliver Parks and Recreation Society manager Carol Sheridan, the owner of the mobile rib hut has agreed to be a bit of an ambassador for the town.
The outlet was formerly on Highway 97 across from the Sikh Temple and recently moved to a downtown location across from the Chevron station.
Owner Sam Tibbitt said in an interview Monday evening h is happy with the approval. “We’ll try it out for the year and see how it goes,” he said.
No ceremony for Queen
Oliver Mayor Ron Hovanes said recently received a letter from the Monarchist League of Canada suggesting the town commemorate the length of Queen Elizabeth’s reign.
Elizabeth II will pass her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria, on Sept. 15 as the longest serving British monarch, with more than 63 years on the throne.
Council agreed to pass the request along to the Legion.
