I asked Sue for a photo and she said – “about time” I have been Mayor for six months.
Our visit with Mayor McKortoff had a number of purposes. I was there to mend fences, do a bit of prodding and one attempt at making the news.
McKortoff told me her maiden name was Clarke* and her great-grandfather was a former Mayor of Toronto. She has a daughter “Sweet Pea” who would like more of her mother’s time. Sue has a Mazda convertible for parades and it was being fixed that day. “My mechanic is excellent”. Just a couple of the interruptions to our visit to her office behind a closed door giving me an insight into the life of this former teacher.
Fire Hall ? – construction begins before September 1st – 6 million dollar tab with a lot of technical input to get the building just right.
YouLearn relocation – she was briefed on that sometime ago. Would miss the downtown location.
Museum situation – “A bit of a mess” but maybe a breather to regroup. The Mayor says everyone was caught off guard on a threatened layoff of sixteen people at Home Building Centre and the right decision had to be made based on the existing circumstances. McKortoff agrees strong leadership needed, a business plan, and more communication between the RDOS/Town/Museum Society if all is to go well in 2020 when the museum can fix it ( the new Main Street building) and move in.
