26 thousand dollars can be saved if YouLearn Osoyoos moves from its storefront location to the high school. Not so fast. Is that a good idea? Staff of the downtown Learning Centre say it would be a shame to move to the high school because a number of their students did not do well in a traditional school, some are street people, adults and others and that may not be an appropriate mix with junior high students.
There is no argument the school district like many in the province are being asked to provide the same level of service with less money. The new budget to be approved in June requires almost $700,000 extra to be taken not from new revenue but from operational surpluses.
The province says there is more low hanging fruit to cut while expenses increase.
One major component of the budget is a $7000 per student grant. This school district needs about 80 new students to make ends meet and called on civic leaders to increase economic opportunities, jobs and social housing.
School District enrollment in the 2011 year – 2395 in the 2019 year – population expected to be 2038 a decline of 357 students in 8 years.
