Highway 3 is getting $27.65 million in improvements for a twisting section of road west of Princeton.
The federal and provincial governments came together to announce the project, which will begin in June.
It involves relocating and straightening the highway to remove two sharp curves and adding a passing lane in each direction.
The realignment project will help reduce collisions, create safer passing opportunities, improve traffic flow and provide better driving conditions between Sunday Creek and Sunday Summit on Highway 3.
Since 2003, there have been at least 24 collisions on that stretch of road, Albas said.
“Even last night, I got stuck behind one truck, and I tell you what. It’s frustrating to get stuck behind one,” he said. “But you really take everyone’s lives into your own hands when you decide to try and illegally pass, so I think this will give people a lot more comfort and make for a smoother trip to the Coast.”
Princeton Mayor Frank Armitage said the improvements will help bring tourists through Princeton.
“The improvements will undoubtedly enhance our town’s ability to attract tourists, make it safer for residents to travel west especially in the winter, and enhance the town’s position as a significant transportation hub,” he said.
