On April 3rd, 2015 at approximately 1157 pm an Osoyoos RCMP member conducted a traffic stop of a stolen 1994 Toyota Camry in Osoyoos on 87th Street. As the member pulled in behind the vehicle the suspect put the stolen vehicle into reverse and rammed the police vehicle causing front end damage to the police vehicle. The suspect then fled in the stolen vehicle north bound toward Oliver.
A pursuit was initiated and with the assistance of the Oliver RCMP a spike belt was successfully deployed on Main Street in Oliver rendering the stolen vehicle immobile. The suspect then fled on foot through yards before he was apprehended by pursuing officers.
21 year old Derek Ledgard of Oliver, BC was arrested and held in custody over the weekend. Ledgard appeared in Provincial court in Penticton on April 7, 2015 and is charged with 1 count of Theft under $5000, 1 count of using a weapon (vehicle) to strike an occupied police vehicle, 1 count of Flight from police, 1 count of Dangerous Driving and 1 count of Resisting Arrest.
Ledgard is scheduled to make his next appearance in Provincial court in Penticton on April 8, 2015. Ledgard will also be facing charges of Breach of Probation. The officer was fortunate he was not injured in this high risk incident.
