The V-Day Oliver-Osoyoos, One Billion Rising Celebration and Art Show at the Osoyoos Indian Band Community Hall had a very successful turnout Sunday.
The theme ‘The Silent Voice’ was powerfully depicted in a range of media and styles. The pieces were eclectic and powerful. There was one particular piece that caused quite a stir. Artist Wina Poliquin exhibited a Live Art model who communicated the theme very effectively. A very brave model indeed. First Nations Artist Corrine Derickson exhibited a leather dress sculpture, inspired by, and in honour of, her niece Roxanne Louie. Our Art Show Coordinator, Maxyne Lockhart, did an amazing job of displaying the pieces with her original use of ‘found’ pallets and cinder blocks.
Our VIP Guest Speakers included Chief Jonathan Kruger, OIB Liaison, Darlene George, Osoyoos Mayor Sue McKortoff, Oliver Town Councillor Petra Veintimilla and Selina Morrison.
Guests enjoyed good food, good wine, good entertainment and dynamic, emotional and inspiring speeches. Some overheard comments included, “that was so heartfelt”, “it was so touching”, the artwork is absolutely amazing”, “I’m so impressed with the talent, how the art is displayed and the event”, and, “It felt so relaxing I felt like I was at a party”.
Tiffany Beckedorf and I would like to thank Chief Clarence Louie and the Osoyoos Indian Band who graciously allowed us to host our event at their Community Hall for the 2nd year in a row. Thank you also to all the speakers and guests who came out to show their support. We also want to thank all the volunteers, without whose help this event would not have been possible.
Now we’re ramping up for our next V-Day Oliver-Osoyoos fundraising event. On Friday April 10th and Saturday April 11th we will be putting on a production of Eve Ensler’s award winning play ‘The Vagina Monologues’. Marji Basso is the Director and Aimee Grice is the Producer. Tickets go on sale this week at various locations in Oliver and Osoyoos.
