Town council will review tonight a draft letter written by Mayor Ron Hovanes to the Attorney General in regards to RCMP policing costs.
Part of that letter states a request to the government:
That the Province of BC assures the Town of Oliver there will be no additional costs borne by the community for any additional RCMP man-hours that will be required to service the ongoing operation of the Okanagan Correction Centre. Nor will the municipality be responsible for any expense associated with capital costs for expansion of the Police Detachment building or any additional clerical staffing that may be required to service the facility”.
The letter goes on to acknowledge that the community is prepared to fund services once the population reaches 5000 persons but respectfully states it should not have to be burdened by costs on federally regulated land in the rural area.
The letter asks that these matters be clarified prior to the opening of the correctional facility.
