WEATHER AND CRIME
“Everybody talks about the weather but nobody seems to do anything about it”. (Attributed to Mark Twain).
Like the above quote, everybody talks about the crime in our community but nobody seems to do anything about it. We complain about not having 24 hour policing but are not willing to pay higher taxes to hire more police officers. “There never seems to be a cop around when you need one”. Once again read the previous sentence.
As you have heard and read in the media there is still, in spite of the reported “lower crime rates”, a lot of crime even in our sleepy little town. The police cannot be everywhere all the time. Unfortunately they usually get involved after the fact.
Oliver Crime Watch patrols the town, usually on Fridays and Saturdays, and acts as extra eyes and ears for the RCMP. Unless we happen to be in the right place at the right time (and we have – reporting fires, accidents, altercations, etc.) our patrols are, hopefully, a deterrent to those who are thinking of committing an offence. We note vehicles, groups and individuals so that if an event does happen we may be able to provide the RCMP with a description which may aid their investigations.
While we cannot do anything about the weather, other than complain, we can hopefully do something to lower the crime rate.
If you would like more information you can e-mail me at olivercrimewatch@gmail.com or attend the Oliver Crime Watch information meeting on Tuesday, Feb 24, in the Cadet Hangar at 7 pm.
