After seeing the latest column from our NDP MP I had to ask:
Doesn’t the NDP vote against all the government’s bills ?
Alex was quick to respond:
Unfortunately we don’t keep running totals in that way. Each bill is given serious consideration by our critics who provide background on the pros and cons as well as the quality of the legislation (ie: will it do what it purports to do and many other factors as well) along with recommendations on whether or not our caucus should support it.
Some bills are voted against from the start and some are supported to the committee stage in the hopes of making amendments. I think the debate on bill C-10, regarding contraband tobacco is one good example of the way the NDP approaches government legislation. S
ee Ms. Françoise Boivin (Gatineau, NDP): comments during this third reading debate. http://www.parl.gc.ca/HousePublications/Publication.aspx?Pub=Hansard&Doc=93&Parl=41&Ses=2&Language=E&Mode=1 (The bill has received Royal Assent and is now the law)
LEGINFO at http://www.parl.gc.ca/LEGISINFO/Home.aspx?ParliamentSession=41-2 is a pretty comprehensive website and includes all the debates and voting records. Government bills are always numbered from C-1 to C-200 in any parliament.
Private Members Bills are numbered C-201 – to as high as they need to go.
I hope this is somewhat helpful for your purposes.
