Planners and building officials gave RDOS directors an update this morning on a serious situation at Kennedy Lake west of Princeton off Highway 3.
Many people have used the lake area as a wild recreational mecca – with no rules other than some form of courtesy and respect.
The owner of the lake area has leased land out to people from Saskatchewan to Vancouver Island – many bring their RV to park under a poorly constructed lean-to. Others have built wonderful homes but much of the building in the area is not covered by a building permit or property zoning.
The Regional District is committed to cleaning up the mess – by mapping the area – issuing notices of demolition and holding meetings with residents to outline the concerns. Staff the regional district happy that 180 people have applied for a permit to legitimize their property and structures.
There is no water supply, the zoning is not in place, roads can change overnight, there is no sewer and no fire protection.
On that subject one director quipped “bring out the wieners”.
A number of orders have been issued and the RDOS is hoping for voluntary compliance but RCMP supervised demolition could take place this fall.
