Curlies are a very rare type of horse and they are special in that they are hypoallergenic for most people who are allergic to regular horses. That this means is that if a person has an allergy to regular horses they may be able to pursue a lifelong dream to own a horse of their own. For may this is like a dream come true. Many people are moved to tears when they learn they can safely tolerate these horses. My own daughter is very allergic to regular horses and it has been something of a miracle for us to be able to embrace our mutual love of horses and do it with horses that do not cause potentially life threatening allergic reactions.
It is with these thoughts in mind that EVERY CURL COUNTS and that is why we made the effort to go to Selah, WA to pick up these four horses that were in dire need. Here is their story:
Last November four very thin and sick Curly horses were adopted from a feedlot in WA state and brought to my farm in BC. I was their last chance before being shipped.
I have been a horse owner and enthusiast all of my life. In the past decade++ I have had the opportunity to rescue and rehab several horses and I am a firm believer that every horse matters. Some of the horses I have rehomed, some have lived out their lives here with me – each case is unique.
When these Curly horses showed up at the feedlot in Washington there were actually TEN of them and luckily 5 of them found private buyers, number 6 the Curly Horse Rescue purchased and then there were 3 left. At 4:45 pm on their final day I called the owner of the feedlot and told him that I would purchase them and that is where this began.
Yes, there were ten horses and the final horse was noticed after the fact – she is assumed to be a smooth coat Curly as she came with in with the Curlies and she certainly does seem to know them. I was not in a position to purchase her, so the Curly Horse Rescue stepped in and bought her too – she came home with me and I am fostering her for them.
Curlies are a special, ancient rare type of horse. They number less than 4000 worldwide, each one of them is special and important to support. Their main claim to fame is the fact that they are hypoallergenic for allergy sufferers and they are also well known for their docile, easy going dispositions.
As stated above – I have rescued many horses over the past decade or so – but this case is unique in that there are FOUR of them and the expenses are mounting up. Any assistance will be so appreciated by me and by these horses. Any excess raised will go directly to the Curly Horse Rescue to help them with horses in the future.
All four of these horses will be available for adoption in the future, when they are well enough to find forever, caring homes.
