The Hornets started off the new year in Penticton versus their rivals Maggie Mustangs in a battle of first place teams in the zone. The game was a hotly contested affair with the Hornets getting down early and having to fight the whole game to try grab a lead; something they were unable to do as Maggie prevailed 73-66. Austin Basso led the team with 19 points followed by Gurshan Dhaliwal with 16 and Blake Miller-Yuckin with 12.
On Thursday the Hornets travelled to Kelowna to play in the Immaculata Mustang Tournament. In their first game the Hornets played St. Thomas Aquinas of Vancouver. The Hornets trailed the whole first half but in the second half they blazed out to a 18 point lead due in part to a 37-8 run in the third quarter. The Hornets won the game 90-72, with Austin Basso had 19 points and was named defensive player of the game, and Raj Bahniwal had 21 points and was named player of the game
The semi final was versus Maggie and the Hornets had something to prove for their loss on Wednesday, and prove it they did as they had a great first quarter jumping out to a 25-14 lead, a lead they would not relinquish the whole game as they won the game 68-57. Austin Basso led the team with 30 points and was named player of the game, Gurshan Dhaliwal was named defensive player of the game. In the final the Hornets played the host Immaculata Mustangs. The game was a battle as both teams held the lead through out, however with 3 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter the Hornets seemed to run out of steam as the Mustangs were able to go on a 13-3 run thus sealing victory by a score of 74-59. Kulbir Grewal led the team with 22 points and was named defensive player of the game, Austin Basso had 20 points and was named player of the game. Basso was also named the Defensive player of the tournament. The Hornets are currently in second place in league with a record of 2-1 and they are currently 12-7 against Canadian teams.
The Hornets next home game is Wednesday at 6:30 at SOSS versus George Elliot of Winfield, the team will be travelling to Pitt Meadows to play in the Marauders Air show tournament, which is full of very stiff competition it will be a good test for the Hornets.
