Well the weekend prior was a tough pill to swallow for the Hornets as they went 1-3 in their home tournament missing the final for the first time in 5 years while also dropping out of the top 10 ranking;
So the week of December 8-13 could only go up so to speak, and it did. The Hornets played in a league game on Tuesday the 9th up in Winfield versus George Elliot. Even though the Hornets started out slowly they were able to cruise to an easy 94-57 victory. The team was led by Gurshan Dhaliwal with 17 points followed by Brett Harrington with 14 and Blake Miller Yuckin who had 13 points and 11 rebounds. Raj Bahniwal had a huge night on the boards with 18.
The Hornets were in Chilliwack this last weekend playing in the GW Grizzly Classic.
The Hornets won the tournament in 2013 and they were hoping for a repeat this year. In their first game they faced Westsyde of Kamloops, and the Hornets came out gunning as they dominated Westsyde enroute to a 72-54 victory. Austin Basso led the Hornets and was named player of the game as hit for 28 points, Gurshan Dhaliwal added 17 followed by Kulbir Grewal with 13.
In the semi finals which was a repeat of last years finals the Hornets faced off against #6 ranked Fulton of Vernon. The two teams met in the semi final of the Westsyde Tournament and the Maroons won that game by 4 ~ 77-73. The Hornets were able to take advantage of a depleted Maroon squad for most of the game but in the end Fulton showed a fighting spirit as they rallied back from being down 16 to being up by 1 late in the fourth quarter. Some big 3 point shots by Manveer Brar allowed the Hornets to escape with a 77-75 victory. Austin Basso led the Hornets with 22 points followed by Gurshan Dhaliwal with 14, Dhaliwal named player of the game.
In their next game the Hornets were filling in for a team that could not make the trip to the tourney so due to the game being and exhibition game the Hornets decided to rest their starters for the final, allowing their bench to get a lot of quality time. This was an exciting as the Hornets trailed Archibishop Carney of Coquitlam by as much as 16, however late in the game the Hornets rallied to take a 3 point lead. Carney did not give up as they hit a big 3 pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. The Hornets sealed the deal in overtime earning them their fourth straight victory and pushing their record to 8 wins and 4 losses. Brett Harrington had 18 points followed by Raj Bahniwal with 17 points and 17 rebounds his 4 double-double in a row. Blake Miller Yuckin also added 17 and Harmeet Brar chipped in with 10.
In the final the Hornets played the host GW Graham in a game that was streamed live on sportscanada.tv, by the sounds of it many people watched the game.
Sadly the Hornets had a tough time scoring as they shot an abyssmal 26% from the 3 point line and not much better from the floor 31%, thus equating to a 81-74 loss. The Hornets trailed by as much as 21 late in the game but they did not quit as they rallied back to close the gap to 4 points with 15 seconds to go and that was the closest they would get.
The Hornets were led by Gurshan Dhaliwal with 19 points, followed by Austin Basso with 15, Miller Yuckin added 12, and Raj Bahniwal had another double double as he scored 11 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. All in a good week leading up to their big trip to play in the Pete Smith Classic at Kalaheo High in Kailua, Hawaii. The Hornets will also play Castle High of Kaneohe, Hawaii. Aloha and please look forward to the teams posts.
