An RCMP officer is in hospital in Kamloops with serious injuries after gunfire broke out during a routine traffic stop early Wednesday morning.
Investigators are still trying to piece together the chain of events, according to Cpl. Cheryl Bush of the Kamloops RCMP detachment. What is known is that the officer was attempting to stop a car at around 2:45 a.m. when “an exchange of gunfire occurred.”
The officer was transported to Royal Inland Hospital and is undergoing surgery for serious injuries, Bush told CTV News Channel in a telephone interview.
4o year old Cpl. J.R. Michaud, a 13 year veteran, married with two children, identified as the injured officer.
The manhunt for a suspect continues.
Meanwhile, police are asking members of the public to be on the lookout for a suspect vehicle and to be on guard for its two occupants.
The car is a white 1998 four-door Chrysler Intrepid with the B.C. licence plate AF7 65A.
“If they do see the vehicle, they should call the RCMP immediately,” Bush said. “They should consider the people associated with this vehicle as armed and dangerous.”
