“When we got there, it was through the roof already and whole front was already burned off,” he said.
The smaller, single-storey home had considerable cedar inside as well, and the fire spread rapidly. All that remains is the concrete basement.
Jones said the homeowner was cooking supper at the time, when a kitchen fire broke out. “Somehow it got onto the cupboards and it cost him his house,” he said.
The man escaped unharmed, the fire chief said, but he and his wife who returned home later were both taken to hospital for apparent treatment of shock.
Jones said with a strong wind blowing, embers from the burning sawdust insulation were carried onto nearby houses. – Credit Penticton Herald
Blaze north of Inkaneep Point Resort below 89th and 164th destroyed an older cabin home on the lakefront over the weekend.
Osoyoos Fire Department called at 8:55pm Saturday night returning at 1:46 am Sunday when the embers were flaring.
Police also called to the scene to assist. As expected the family expressed shock with the loss of a home according to officers.
Cpl. Jason Bayda: “Osoyoos RCMP attended to 16427 87 Street, Osoyoos for a house fire. Early indication is the fire started in the kitchen while one of the home owners was cooking. Our office has been involved in providing assistance to the family as you could imagine they have suffered a great loss in losing their home.”
