SMOKE-FREE, SMOKELESS TOBACCO-FREE AND ELECTRONIC SMOKING PRODUCTS-FREE SCHOOL DISTRICT

The Board of Education acknowledges the importance of providing healthy learning and working environments for students and employees and recognizes the significant health hazard implicit in the use of tobacco and electronic smoking products. The Board encourages all efforts to eliminate and prevent the use of tobacco products and electronic cigarettes and related products by students and employees of the District.

In accordance with this belief as part of legislation and Bill 10 – 2007 Tobacco Control Act (Banning Tobacco and Smoking in Public Places and Schools) Amendment Act, 2007 effective September 2007, the Board of Education directs that as per Section 2.2.(2) “a person must not smoke or use tobacco, or electronic smoking products, or hold lighted tobacco, in or on school property.”

This means that any use of tobacco or smokeless products is prohibited on all grounds and in all buildings and vehicles owned by School District No. 53 (Okanagan Similkameen).
