Entries from the South Okanagan are well represented from the communities of: Osoyoos, Oliver, OK Falls, Kaleden and Penticton. There are 2 artists from the lower mainland; Surrey and Port Moody.
Disappointing numbers from our younger artists in that only 3 entries (from 2 artists) in the Emerging Artist category – age 13 to 18. It means that there are no awarding of a prize in this category as there are fewer than 5 entries as noted in the guidelines.
Lower numbers as well for Budding Artist age 12 and under. Only 5 entries. That category just squeaked by to be able to give out awards.
The schools were canvassed and personally given a number of entry forms before the end of last year’s school term. The school strike was not a factor as the entry close date was Aug. 31st. Perhaps we should canvass the schools earlier, perhaps now for next year. Creating Art may be a winter activity, not a summer one. So important for any community, its unfortunate that arts and culture have had to take a back seat in funding.
It should however be a fantastic show for both days with the one draw prize of a well stocked wine fridge at the end of Sunday’s show. Each visitor paying their donation admission receives a chance. On Saturday they also receive a ballot to judge the art for themselves. Our MC Brock Jackson from EZrock and the music provided by Jazz Out West will make the opening reception Saturday night a wonderful party celebration of the arts.
