Soon, Sgt. Kevin Schur will move his Oliver family to Penticton and take his work to Kelowna.
Schur will do something rare but maybe not unique – train his superiors in leadership skills.
Under the auspices of the National Performance Programme, Sgt. Schur will become a Performance Leadership Coordinator teaching in Chilliwack (training institute) and Kelowna.
He applied for the job after taking a number of programme courses recently and the institute signaled that it needed trainers.
Schur has been in the South Okanagan 9 years serving first in Oliver, the Border Enforcement Team and then Osoyoos detachment.
Sgt. Schur says a lot of his decision making is based on family reasons, kids going to school in Penticton, army cadets and the employment and pursuits of his wife, Kim. Both have army backgrounds and work with cadets.
What kind of summer has it been in Osoyoos? You ask.
Sgt. Schur says one of the busiest years with horse racing, July 1st and Osoyoos Live which preceded the annual Cherry Fiesta. He says the force was busy with targeting behavior – knowing where the problems are going to occur and who is most likely involved. He says Osoyoos is lucky to have some additional tools with the Town delegating certain powers to the police.
Schur says RCMP can issue an expulsion letter to anyone who is not following civil law or any bylaw of the Town. He says it is very effective and could be tried elsewhere. He also says Osoyoos is a draw for gang bangers but police have and use the tools to let them know that negative criminal behavior will not be tolerated.
