A Mexican national has been sentenced to more than 6 years in prison after pleading guilty to smuggling bricks of cocaine across the US/Canada border earlier this year.
According to Cpl. Laurie White of the RCMP, 19 year old Andy Javier Garcia Macias was arrested shortly after he and another man crossed the border from the United States into Canada, near the Boot Lake area east of Oroville/Osoyoos Lake.
Garcia Macias was found carrying a backpack with nine bricks of cocaine, weighing approximately nine kilograms. The second man had fled back to the United States and was arrested by United States Border Patrol.
At the time, he had nothing in his possession, but a search of the area in Canada found a second backpack containing an additional eight kilos of cocaine.
His first court appearance on a federal charge CDS 52 Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking was January 6th.
According to court records he was handed a jail sentence of 2315 days and a 10 year prohibition from carry firearms.
Time to be served 6 years and 125 days
