Policy Change Recommendations:
Policy A-2 Board Member Compensation
Policy Committee discussed per diem and remuneration rates as compared to like-sized
districts. Trustees recommended that board member compensation remain unchanged and revisit in October. It was recommended that this item be forwarded to the next regular Board of Education meeting for information.
Policy G-7 Community Use- Revisions
Policy Committee reviewed changes to the community use policy which encourages community members and organizations to use school facilities. It was recommended that this item be forwarded to the next regular Board of Education meeting for information.
Policy C-7 Reclaimed Water (Effluent)
Policy Committee reviewed this new policy which supports the use of reclaimed water for irrigating land within the school district and recommended it be given notice of motion at the next regular Board of Education meeting.
Review of Bylaw No. 20 Trustee Election
Title Change: District Principal of Special Services
Superintendent Bev Young recommended changing the job title of the District Principal of Special Services to “District Principal of Student Services” which is more reflective of the many student areas Terry Collis oversees. It was recommended that this item be forwarded to the next regular Board of Education meeting for information and discussion.
Aboriginal Education News:
Pow Wow: Our sixth annual pow wow was a great success. Congratulations to Helen Gallagher and the rest of the Aboriginal department. On Friday, April 25th 458 elementary and 177 secondary students attended to learn about pow wow protocol and dance. As well as our students, this year we had students from Penticton, Boundary school district, Okanagan-Shuswap school district and the Nicola Similkameen school district join us. Thank you to the district Aboriginal Education Advisory Council for sponsoring it and to our three First Nations bands for sponsoring and supporting it. Special thanks to Southern Okanagan Secondary for hosting us.
District Aboriginal Graduation Ceremony: Will be at Similkameen Elementary Secondary School on June 17, 2014 beginning with dinner at 5:00 p.m. Please come and join us in this very special occasion.
