Charlie Fisher, Wildstone Environmental, explains operation of Demolition, Renovation and Construction waste sort facility at Okanagan Falls Landfill.
The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen has completed improvements to the Okanagan Falls and Keremeos Landfills. A new demolition waste sorting facility has been constructed at the Okanagan Falls Landfill. A new scale has been installed at the Keremeos Landfill.
In 2004 the RDOS began developing the Okanagan Falls Landfill as a regional service area centre for demolition, renovation and construction (DRC) waste. This strategy was initiated for several reasons. The Okanagan Falls Landfill banned food waste from being delivered to the Site to stop bears from being habituated to eating garbage. Residential and commercial garbage containing food waste is now directed to the Campbell Mountain Landfill which is surrounded by an electric bear fence. In exchange for accepting garbage at the Campbell Mountain Landfill, property owners in Penticton and the Lower Similkameen Valley can now take DRC waste to Okanagan Falls.
