1. Sexual Health Program – in the new school year – the implementation of this required program will change – going from a contractor taught course to a program by local teachers in each school. Exact details not hammered out but the Board will be asked in a couple of weeks to endorse the idea. Some complaints at the Wednesday meeting that teachers not involved in the program planning so far. That complaint both from a senior administrator and the teachers union. The were assured that once the green light is given then teachers will be heavily involved in providing experience and input. The sexual health education program is approved by Victoria but much of it is a highly successful course designed in Alberta. Some concerns about what classes or program segments dropped to fit this in. The program starts at Grade 4 and there will be parent involvement and choices given if the material is believed too sensitive.
2. Summer Reading Program – Deputy Superintendent Jim Insley says these programs run in elementary schools for primary students in July are highly successful in helping some children maintain their grade level in reading and math skills. 2013 was the 9th year for Read and Rec’, Rhyme and Rec’. and Read and Tec’. Rhyme and Rec’ is intended for kindergarten students.
3. Student Fees Policy – lively discussion on what is a student fee, what is optional and requires a fee and what charges are allowed if approved by the School Board. The Ministry has stated that no one can be denied an education because of fees. Most fees are for optional choices made by student or parent.
