When voters go to the polls this November – they will face a choice.
Yea or Nay on the matter of funding for the operations and management of the Frank Venables Theatre.
Town Council and the Area C Director confirmed Monday that one vote (of all rural and town voters) will take place later this year on the question of a new joint service agreement that calls for a maximum of 10cents/$1000 of assessed value as revenue to cover the cost of management of the new theatre at SOSS.
The other choice was the Alternative Approval Process (AAP) that could have been used and was endorsed by RDOS staff and local directors at the Penticton Regional Board table. AAP is a counter petition where 10 percent of the population would need to sign forms to take it to referendum.
That process was perceived by some as being negative and all were optimistic that a referendum would be approved and not prove to be divisive.
In 2008 – a referendum was held to raise $3.8 million dollars to refurbish the old theatre and that vote passed at about 75% in both rural and town.
It was agreed that once a positive vote is received the funding can be included in the 2015 RDOS budget.
