On March 24, 2014 the Oliver Detachment received the following report from an Oliver resident: For the past two years the complainant has been contacted and harassed by a person representing themselves as a representative for Microsoft. The complainant that she felt the contact was a scam, and reportedly advised the caller of the same. She went further stating that she advised Microsoft that if their contact continued she would be reporting the harassment to the Police. Recently the complainant purchased a new computer and began experiencing problems with the machine. The reputed to be Microsoft agent contacted her recently and due to the fact that she was having problems with the computer she relented and invited the rep to assist her. At this point she was requested to pay $299 to allow this rep access to her computer and to resolve the issues she had been having. The complainant made the payment to Microsoft and now she is unable to access her hard drive at all.
This is a common scam and although not a police matter, if you have received calls like this please report them to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. Information on contact is available on line.
