Director Allan Patton says he is happy with the results of last week’s meeting on Highway signage and he learned a lot.
This week he will seek a meeting with the Ministry of Highways (MOTI) to find out how flexible they could be in erecting government signs to direct travelers off the highway to third party businesses e.g. Osoyoos Cottages, Riverside Gardens, etc.
Patton says that is the most likely possibility as the RDOS board is adamant that the highway become uncluttered and third party signs not be erected on private property.
There are two governments – provincial and regional involved. The provincial highways department is ready to clear its right of way of all signage and the Regional District is ready to clean up a mess of its own design by not enforcing the existing zoning bylaw on signage.
Patton says there are legitimate concerns of farmers and off highway businesses but whatever happens must be regulated and be legal.
Patton said many of the farmers at the recent meeting were satisfied with the information and appeared to like the clean up idea.
