The City of Penticton is seeking expressions of interest from those who want the opportunity to organize and operate the Challenge Penticton Canada triathlon and festival.
The City of Penticton is seeking community-minded proponents with the necessary qualifications to build on the success of the race – ensuring that the Challenge philosophy of putting athletes first continues in its third year and beyond.
“This is an incredible opportunity for an organization to take a world-class race to whole new heights,” said Mayor Garry Litke. “We thank the current organizers for their dedication to the community. The inaugural Challenge Penticton Canada restored a level of quality to our time-honoured triathlon, in addition to generating significant economic activity in the entire South Okanagan. This would not have been possible without the society’s tireless efforts in promoting our city as a premier destination for sport.”
Challenge Penticton Canada builds upon a 32-year history of running long-distance triathlons, which became part of the global series of full, relay and half triathlons within the Challenge Family in 2013.
“Penticton has one of the most remarkable races since the earliest days of the sport, and last year’s success is only the beginning,” said Challenge Family CEO Felix Walchshöfer. “The Challenge Family has committed to working with the City and future organizers to ensure that Penticton’s legendary race continues.”
The City has a licence to operate a Challenge Family race, and has currently assigned the responsibility to organize and operate the race to the Penticton Triathlon Race Society through a legal assignment. The Society Board has agreed to assist with any transition required as of Aug. 26, 2014 – the registration date after the 2014 race.
“The Penticton Triathlon Race Society believes that a review of the business model responsible for a million dollar race is healthy and beneficial for all involved. The ideal operating model will see an individual or private entity with a vested interest lead this race to its maximum potential. This entity will understand the value and importance this race brings to our community and the communities of the South Okanagan and will eat, breathe and sleep Challenge Penticton Canada,” said Paulette Rennie, President of the Penticton Triathlon Race Society. “The board and staff of the PTRS have worked tirelessly to bring this race to life from the ground up with only experienced triathlon staff and volunteers. This volunteer board has been willing to roll up their sleeves to get the work done.
“Without exception, board members are continuing to work to on the 2014 race and are excited with the progress we have made in both the athlete registrations and exciting partnerships with sponsors. We will continue to work at all levels to keep the momentum and grow this race,” said Rennie.
