Loose Bay – is a campsite at the top of Secrest Hill – for French Canadian farmer workers primarily. Been in operation for many years.
It has always had water for drinking, washing and cooking – supplied by a generous neighbor. That could come to come an end.
The Loose Bay Society had its annual general meeting last Wednesday and the major item was an electronic communication from Covert Farms indicating that the water supply arrangement will come to an end soon.
Exact details of what is contained in the letter are unconfirmed. Attempts to get a hold of Gene Covert have failed in the last 24 hours.
Greg Norton of the Loose Bay Society was contacted by ODN in person on his farm today. Norton was reluctant to speak on the record. He says he hopes the camp can operate this summer and other options are being looked at.
The RDOS budget prior to 2014 contained a line item for $4000 to enhance landscaping and water at Loose Bay.
A search for an alternative water supply is the next step unless a temporary solution can be found for this summer.
The implications of not having an organized camp for summer farm help are immense.
