The SOSS Sr. Boys basketball team went 2-2 at the AA Provincials that were held this past week at the Langley Events centre. The hornets entered the provincials at Okanagan #2, and the 7th seed overall. In their opener the hornets faced off against Highland of Comox. The hornets had prepared all week for this game and it showed as the were able to easily defeat Highland 94-69. Gurk Dhaliwal was the player of the game as he scored 50 points on 11/21 shooting from the 3 point range. Malcolm Heinrichs added 21 points and pulled down 12 rebounds in the win. In the quarter final the hornets faced off against the #2 seed RC Palmer of Richmomd. This was a hard fought game that had the hornets down by 9 at the half, as well the Hornets lost their star guard Gurk Dhaliwal to a knee injury. In the second half the Hornets erased that deficit as they jumped out to a 7 point lead. However late in the fourth quarter key starters Malcolm Heinrichs and Navi Dhaliwal both fouled out allowing Palmer to take a 4 point lead. Raj bahniwal cut the lead to 1 with a huge 3 pointer but that is as close as it got as the hornets fell 85-81. Malcolm Heinrich scored 41 points in the loss, and Ravi Bassi added 14 and Navi Dhaliwal chipped in with 12. In their third game the hornets defeated St.Thomas Aquinas 75-66. Once again Heinrichs led the team on scoring with 21, Austin Basso added 12 and Bassi poured in 10 more points. In their final game the hornets came out flat and lethargic in a game that was a low scoring defensive battle, in the end the hornets playing their third game without Dhaliwal were unable to muster enough offense as they fell 45-38, in most likely the lost scoring game of the hornets in the past 10’years or more. Malcolm Heinrichs scored 16 points and Austin Basso added 8 followed by Ravi Bassi’s 6 points. Malcolm Heinrichs was named to the tournament 2nd Allstar team. The hornets finished 6th overall. All in all it was a very successful tournament and season and the team is already looking forward to next year and trying to better this years performance.
