SOSS alumni Dallas Plensky (1995), Lesley (Magnus) Noftle (1995) and Heather (Smith) Long (1997) are being inducted into the UBC Sports Hall of Fame as members of the national championship-winning 1998-1999 and 1999-2000 UBC Women’s Field Hockey teams. All three played on strong SOSS field hockey teams coached by Ian Gibson.
Dallas and Lesley capped off their five years of varsity field hockey with the 98-99 and 99-00 championships. Heather played a golden season with the UBC Thunderbirds in 98-99, but suffered a knee injury that prevented her return to the team. The Thunderbirds posted identical records of 14-1-1 in each banner season, but 1998’s gold medal was especially memorable because it ended UBC’s eight year championship drought.
Dallas directed the High Performance Program for Field Hockey BC, coached several provincial teams, and is now a science, p.e. and gifted education teacher in Burnaby. Heather pursued a career in law and specializes in health law for the Alberta government. She currently resides in Edmonton, where she is also raising her family.
Lesley represented Canada in field hockey, earned her teaching degree, and is raising her family in Oliver. Dallas, Heather, Lesley and their teammates will be honoured at the annual UBC Big Block Banquet on April 1st.
