Grand Chief Stewart Philip, the leader of the Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs, is recovering in hospital after a serious car accident Friday night.
Phillip was driving his Chevrolet Tahoe east along Highway 3 near Hope when his vehicle slid on black ice, crashed into a rock face, and flipped onto its roof.
He sustained non life-threatening injuries.
“Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, his wife Joan and their family sincerely express their deep thanks for all the individuals who stopped and immediately rendered first-aid and organized traffic control to keep him safe until the RCMP and BC Ambulance Service arrived,” said a statement issued today.

“They are profoundly grateful for the care and attention of the first responders and the nurses and doctors of the Fraser Canyon Hospital.”
Phillip is now recovering in Penticton Regional Hospital.
