Retired Tuc-el-nuit teacher, Katie Friesen, bought an old Mexican hotel on Isla Mujeres (near Cancun) six years ago. She and daughter Safari renovated the place from top to bottom, put in comfortable furniture, planted an interior tropical garden, created a rooftop area with communal kitchen, dipping pool, and sunning deck, and were rewarded for their efforts last week by being named by TripAdvisor as the Number One hotel of thirty-five on the island.
