Pro D Days
We have begun the process of developing the district calendar for 2014/2015. The Board of Education has put forward a calendar for public consultation. They would like public input into the calendar. The calendar reflects SOSTU’s proposal to add 2 professional days inside the September to June bookends while maintaining the 2-week spring break. The consultation process will begin next week – please be sure to give your input as the Board must declare their calendar by the end of March.
Superintendent Bev Young says: “No decision will be made on the calendar proposal to put two non-instructional days into the bookends of the school year until it goes out for consultation to all staff and partner groups.”
February Learning Forum in OK Falls
Our February learning forum is titled Social Emotional Learning – A School Community Approach. Parents, students and community members are invited to join us on February 12th from 7:00 to 8:00 pm at Okanagan Falls Elementary School to hear how their school is providing students with skills and connections to be successful learners.
Osoyoos Mini Theatre
While the Board supports community use of the theatre at Osoyoos Secondary School, as well as any efforts to refrain from referring to it as ‘mini’, it has made the decision not to invest funds into additional signage for a name or enter into a public process to name the theatre at this time.
Concerns about washrooms and change rooms were also brought forward at our meeting with SOAP and the Osoyoos & District Arts Council. The board is receptive to any partnerships to fund improvements to the theatre and will explore these requests with them and other interested community organizations in the future.
Superintendent Bev Young says: “Signage was approved for the OSS theatre to direct community members from the parking lot and to indicate a ‘gym’ sign above the gym and a ‘theatre’ sign above the theatre so that it is clear to those attending an event at the theatre.
The board does not have jurisdiction to approve any signage for Hwy 97.”
