1.4 million flu shots ordered and that amount given out and the demand is increasing. Year to year there are differences in who is infected – BUT the rate of infection is similar to the previous year.
You may be hearing increased chatter about the flu, particularly around one of the strains called H1N1. There has been an increase of cases of H1N1 in our region, though, overall flu rates are similar to last year. What’s different this flu season is who is getting sick. Those at increased risk of H1N1 are adults and children with chronic medical conditions and children under five.
Getting a flu shot – Influenza vaccine is the most effective method we have to prevent getting sick from influenza or passing it on to others. In British Columbia, the seasonal flu vaccine is provided free of charge to those eligible. In particular, adults (less than 65 years) and children with chronic medical conditions and children under five years old are encouraged to get a flu shot.
