Like to tell you a brief tale about a man with many stories – this man is known to his many friends and relatives as Lame Bear.
Lame Bear lives on a mountain in the snow these days in an idyllic setting far from civic centres in the wide valley below.
His name is Barry Kilback and he has just published a book of stories that tell of his exciting life – trials, tribulations and joy.
If you don’t know Barry the taxidermist, fisher, naturalist, hunter, father, husband – you might be confused by the wheel chair. This is a man that is definitely not disabled in any way we could see. He drives a grader, a quad, a snowmobile, a truck, a river boat and might be taking up sky diving for all I know. He makes a great cup of coffee. His phone rings off the hook and visitors make the journey up the hill on a regular basis with his wife Helen off to work.
I had a brief session with Barry on Tuesday at his beautiful modern home in the hills at 150 (Up the Snowy Trail). If you find it call me. He likes his privacy.
Friends and family know Barry as someone who finds humour in just about anything including adversity – he has had a number of serious challenges in his life but always bounces back.
Barry uses spicy language. One interesting part of this story is that he wrote down all the tales and gave them to a group of lady editors who were going to help him. They wanted all the swear words eliminated and won the argument. Most of his friends now ask – can we have a copy with all the “long words in it” but to no avail.
Find the book and read it – I won’t wreck it here. See the on-line link at the bottom. Barry says sales of the book have gone “ballistic”
One personal note I do not know Barry well but we did determine that I worked with him at the old Oliver Super Valu with Ken Forbes many many years ago – when we were in our teens. We both rode a Honda in the sixties – another commonality.
Good to make your acquaintance – Lamebear.
