The RCMP has now confirmed that a former member of the Osoyoos detachment has been suspended.
Cst Amit Goyal is the man in question but the RCMP has not stated why the suspension this summer took place. In June Cst. Goyal’s name was taken off the media distribution list. His whereabouts unknown.
The RCMP will not confirm that an investigation is underway but a number of newspaper stories indicate that members of the Trail detachment were called in to help with the matter.
The following in quotes is the official response given to me today:
“In general, as you know, we typically do not confirm or deny investigations unless there is an investigational or public safety need. Specific details about any investigation only become known when that investigation results in charges being laid by Crown Counsel. This is done not only to protect the integrity of our investigations but also to protect all citizens that may be subject to a police investigation where no charges are laid. With respect specifically to RCMP members, when a member is charged criminally the RCMP demonstrates transparency and pro-actively releases that information. We also have to be mindful though that we are subject to the provisions of the Privacy Act. Formal disciplinary hearings, however, are a matter of public record.
I can tell you that Cst. Goyal is currently suspended with pay. For background info on suspensions see http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/eth/code-eng.htm
Given the above, we aren’t able to comment further.”
