OLIVER – Work is now complete on the construction of the McIntyre Passing Lanes on Highway 97 between Oliver and Okanagan Falls. This major safety improvement upgraded approximately 1.5 kilometres of the highway with passing lanes in both directions.
- This project is located between the communities of Oliver and Okanagan Falls, north of Gallagher Lake.
- This project was completed in partnership with the Town of Oliver to ensure that their irrigation channel under the highway was upgraded with minimal impact to area farmers.
- The highway upgrades includes passing lanes in each direction with a paved 2.6 metre centre median, 2.0 metre wide shoulders, rumble strips, and roadside barrier where required.
- This project was undertaken in a manner that protected the unique wildlife and ecosystems in the area during construction.
- The total cost of this project was $10 million, with R355 Enterprises completing the road works and Dawson Construction upgrading the Irrigation Channel.
- Work started December 3, 2012 and completed on November 7, 2013
- The new passing lanes will provide assured passing opportunities between Oliver and Okanagan Falls, while reducing delays, traffic queuing, and driver frustration.
- Wider shoulders will improve safety for all users of the highway including vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.
