The 2013/2014 curling season is well under way. The Eastlink Curling Centre is enjoying an increase in curlers this year, for the third year in a row. The Day League has begun the season with 10 rinks, up from 8 last year. Men’s, ladie’s, and mixed leagues are about the same, and the Friday Fun League is full.
The Corporate League has also shown an increase, with 9 rinks, up from 7 last year. The perennial winners, Parks and Rec, are back to defend their title from the likes of Edward Jones, Munckhof, NkMip Golf Course and Eastlink. Newcomers Super Valu, Gerards Equipment, Teachers and Constellation brands are also hoping to hoist the cherished trophy next March.
One of the activities undertaken by volunteers at the curling centre each year is to assist with the school curling programs. So far, we have children in Grades 6 and 7 from Oliver Elementary, Tuc El Nuit and Sen’Pok’Chin all coming in to learn the basics of the game. Oliver Legion, Elks, Lions and Kiwanis all help sponsor curling for these kids as well as for the Youth League. Other Youth sponsors include TRU Building supplies, Subway, Nulton Irrigation and Dr Jordan Noftle.
And last, but certainly not least in either skill or enthusiasm, our volunteers teach and coach Oliver’s own Special Olympians to prepare them to beat the world! All in all, the Eastlink Curling Centre is a very busy place.
