A delegation from Sensible BC will appear before council on Monday in Oliver in an effort to raise awareness about a campaign to hold a referendum to decriminalize possession of marijuana.
Amanda Stewart, coordinator for the Boundary and Penticton districts, said they have been taking it to the streets throughout the area in recent weeks.
“We are revving it up, traveling quite a bit to Okanagan Falls and Oliver. Just yesterday, we were at the Twin Lakes store,” she said.
The goal of the campaign, which started Sept. 9, is to have a referendum on the Sensible Policing Act, which would decriminalize cannabis possession in BC and start the province on the path to a legally regulated system.
To have that referendum , canvassers need to collect 400,000 signatures by Dec. 5., province wide they currently have one third of the signatures needed,
In Penticton they just passed the 2,000 mark, with a goal of getting 6,000 signatures. So far they have gathered 1,900 in Boundary.
The goal in Boundary is to get 4,500 signatures.
