Invitation to Public Guided Tour of ORRI Phase I
Salmon Spawning Site
Saturday, October 19th 1 to 3 p.m.
Meet at Oliver Visitors Centre 6431 Station Street, Oliver at 12:45 Pm
Did you know that the Okanagan River sockeye population is one of only two remaining populations in the international Columbia River system and that this population was on the edge of extinction? After several years of remedial action the sockeye salmon have returned and are busy spawning just north of Oliver. After spending two to three years in the Pacific Ocean, mature sockeye begin their arduous 1200 km journey up the Columbia River to the Okanagan River traveling a total of over 4000 km during their life cycle. This year’s run is smaller than 2012 but about 50,000 have returned, quite an increase from the 1998 recorded low of 2048.
Join us to witness this natural phenomenon and learn more about the Okanagan River Restoration and how several initiatives are saving the endangered Okanagan Sockeye Sponsored by OSCA (Okanagan Similkameen Conservation Alliance) and ONA (Okanagan Nation Alliance)
