1. Superintendent Bev Young says the school September startup went well with a positive and smooth beginning to the new year. Enrollment is down about 25 students in the district.
2. Initial reports on the first of 7 inquiry days – held yesterday throughout the district were positive says Assistant Superintendent Jim Insley. Students sent home at noon Wednesday to allow for a 2 hour “Inquiry Time” session of teachers and administrators. Collaboration the key methodology.
3. Correspondence received from SOAP – a letter from Patrick Turner asking for better signage at the Osoyoos Secondary School Mini Theatre. The South Okanagan Amateur Players said the name MINI Theatre is a bit condescending and could be changed to reflect it usefulness, size and importance. Directional signs from the parking lot are also needed he says.
4. October 9th – a Learning Forum will be held at the SOSS library featuring information on career routes for graduating students – work experience, apprenticeships, industry training and dual credit programs
5. Even though 18 organizations use the HUB at OES – there is no facilitator/coordinator. The future of the HUB was discussed earlier in September – with OES Principal Barton Tumlinson taking the lead in coordinating the use of the space at Oliver Elementary.
6. The school board endorsed a new community plan for early learning which proposes a $10 fee per day for early education. Child care advocates and early childhood educators are recommending such a plan which is NOT yet funded by the federal or provincial governments.
7. School District #53 has basically stopped attempting to get foreign students to utilize services here as the cost is too high and difficult to administer. Board members told that the demand for a rural education for foreign students is low with many overseas parents opting for “big city” schools.
