Monday at approximately 21:30 Hours Oliver RCMP members received a report of possible mischief in progress at the South Okanagan Secondary School. The caller reported seeing ‘people’ on the roof of the new auditorium and, that it sounded like they were spray painting something. Patrols to the area resulted in contact with two young male Oliver residents. One of the males was in possession of a can of orange flourescent spray paint. Both males were detained for investigation and ultimately turned over to their respective parents. An assessment of the damage was not available until the morning of September 24, 2013.
Today members of the Oliver Detachment attended the site of the damage and were directed to numerous aspects of the building that were damaged during the night. Initial observations show that the damage consisted of spray painted graffiti and that the color of the paint appeared to be consistent with the can of paint that was seized during the initial investigation. Further to the spray paint damage, a fire extinguisher was discharged into a roof top HVAC vent.
The total value of this mischief has yet to be determined and once the investigation is completed the potential for charges will be assessed.
The potential to bring this investigation to a successful conclusion is related not only to the support of an Osoyoos member who was in Oliver as part of the existing mutual aid agreement between the two Detachments but, more importantly because of the diligence of the witness who called the RCMP in the first place.
