Recycled paving materials a good neighbour make
The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen is doing its part to be a good neighbor by surfacing a gravel road that leads to the Okanagan Falls Wastewater Treatment Plant.
And it will be doing the environment a good turn as well.
“The newly created Rail Road is actually our driveway,” explained RDOS Engineer Liisa Bloomfield , referring to the 3.5-metre wide gravel road that runs parallel to Hwy. 97 from the newly constructed entrance by Keogan Park to the plant’s front door.
“Traffic to the wastewater treatment plant, although sporadic, is creating dust and other problems for our neighbours, both along the driveway and above us. We’re going to correct that.”
The Regional District plans to surface the 1,500-metre gravel driveway with recycled asphalt millings and a material to rejuvenate the asphalt.
The asphalt millings were recently removed from Hwy. 97 as part of the four-lane construction project south of Vaseux Lake.
The surfacing is scheduled for the week of September 16. The use of recycled materials is consistent with the Regional District’s commitment to building an environmentally sustainable community.
The road has become a popular walkway for Okanagan Falls residents and the Regional District is asking pedestrians to stay off the road until September 20 while surfacing takes place and settles.
The $11.7-million Okanagan Falls Wastewater Treatment Plant opened last July.
