Over the last several weeks the Osoyoos RCMP has received reports of telephone scams in Osoyoos targeting the elderly.  The most common scam involves the caller saying they are a relative such as a niece or nephew and they are in need of money for a car repair, legal bill, or some other urgent matter.  The caller will ask that money be wired to them.

Please do not send money in any form unless you are 100% sure of who you are dealing with.  Remember it does not cost money to get money back and if you are a winner of some sort of contest it should not cost you money to claim a prize.  If you are unsure or have been called by a fraud artist you can call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Section toll free at 1-888-495-8501, or contact them through www.phonebusters.com.

On September 14th, 2013 at approximately 3:00 am, Walnut Beach Resort Security called for the assistance of the RCMP with a room full of unruly guests.  A group of men were in a hotel room partying loudly and disturbing other guests.  The group had ignored the hotel staff’s requests to be quiet.  Police attended at the hotel room and found 5 mostly intoxicated men in the room and asked them to go to their respective rooms and call it a night.  Most of the men were reasonable and the room’s registered guest also asked the men to leave.  One drunk man continued yelling and became confrontational with the Police despite ongoing advice from his friends to go to bed.  The man believed he could be as loud as he wanted because he rented a room at the resort.  It turns out the 50 year old man from Surrey was wrong and he was arrested by the Police for Causing a Disturbance and he spent the night in jail until he was sober.

On September 15th, 2013, Osoyoos RCMP responded to a report of a Jet Skier who had driven too close to a paddle boarder causing them to fall.  The paddle boarder was able to identify the Jet Skier and Police issued a Canada Shipping Act Ticket to a 35 year old woman from Surrey for Operating a Vessel in an Unsafe, Careless Manner.  The ticket carries a $230.00 penalty.
