1. Corrections BC has announced a series of public meetings in the South Okanagan.
An open meeting will be held in the Oliver Community Centre on October 9th (time will be announced later). Two other meetings will be held – one at the Osoyoos Indian Band and a final one in Osoyoos. These meetings are designed to allow the public to get answers to any questions they have re: prison jobs, construction work opportunities, and when the project will begin/completed.
Mayor Ron Hovanes says the Corrections Branch has held a number of private meetings in the area and is now prepared to meet and greet with the public.
2. Town of Oliver council has decided to write the Regional District and express its unhappiness with a recent decision making it necessary for communities in the South Okanagan/Similkameen to fund hike and bike trail maintenance in Penticton.
3. Installation of sprinklers at the historic town office will proceed. The only tender received for the work was agreed to even though it will cost $15 thousand more than budgeted. Council had delayed this project in previous years but decided it the risking was increasing over time and it was appropriate to proceed now.
4. Owners of the Green Acres MHP received the green light for a 5 unit expansion of that Park Drive park. Two councillors expressed some concern about the density of the development but in the end – permission to proceed was given.
5. Owners of the D and L Pawn Shop requested information on the possibility that a U-Haul station could be located next to their store in the old Greyhound Building. Council requested they take out a Temporary Use Permit application and then council would decide what was best for the neighbourhood.
6. Owners of a house just built at 916 Rockcliffe Rd were told Monday – that a notice on title – will be issued after insufficient work standards on footings was detected by the building inspector and a consulting soil engineer. That notice can be taken off once the work is complete to the satisfaction of the experts.
7. A deal has been struck with the South Okanagan Flying Club for the operations of the Terminal Building and grounds around. The Town will offer a grant in aid for about $2500 in cash/in-kind for utility costs, janitorial and lawn mowing costs for the SOFC owned building on Town land.
8. The councillors endorsed a proposal to accept about $75 thousand a year from the Multi Material Recycling Incentives program that will subsidize the cost of recycling in Oliver. Certain products will be collected and taken to an RDOS site in Okanagan Falls. More details of how this will affect us will be released soon as it goes into effect next year. The MMRI is a new provincial initiative that charges the producers of paper, wrap and packaging a fee which encourages the recycling of all such material.
